Education and Training in Law Enforcement
Education. Police agencies encourage canidates to take courses or training related to law
enforcement. Most departments require 1 or 2 years of college coursework or a college degree.
Which Courses to Take?
Most entry-level police jobs require completion of some formal post secondary education, and a significant
number require a college degree. Many post education schools, community colleges, four year colleges, and
universities offer programs in law enforcement or administration of justice.

Tuition and Cost
Some agencies offer tuition assistance for officers to work toward degrees in
criminal justice, police science, administration of justice, or public administration.
State and local agencies require recruits train in their agency’s police academy. Training in these
academies can be between 8 to 14 weeks. Classroom training includes State laws and local ordinances, constitutional
law, civil rights, accident investigation, patroling, traffic control, the use of firearms, self-defense, first
aid, and emergency response.
Federal law enforcement agencies require a bachelor’s degree or related work experience or a combination of the
two. Most States require at least 2 years of college study for Fish and game wardens.
